The idea of a specialized field within the larger field of Communications that is completely devoted to technical information is not actually new, but has recently seen a rebirth with the quantum leaps taken in e-commerce taken in the last decade. Technical communication, in its purest form is simply the communicating of technical information to a specialized audience for the purpose of providing them with the information they need to perform a function.
Large companies and even governments have utilized technical manuals and user manuals for decades, since the ability to use a product properly needs to be translated in terms appropriate for the product, whether it is a telescope or a high-tech communications system. Today, however, much of the work done in the field of technical communications is geared toward the conveyance of information either over the Internet or for use with computers and computer software. Often many high-tech devices have user manuals that are not only available in a printed version, but also on a CD or on-line.
Some even have interactive chat arenas where specialists can communicate the usage and applications of the product or help troubleshoot a problem. This information is provided by specialists, often a team of them, who put together an effective way of providing this often very detail-oriented information for the customer in professional, well-constructed manner.
